The two protagonists are 17, and when Johann joins the class of outsider Ludwig, the two become friends. The relationship between the boys becomes closer and closer as they begin to form a rowing team in a “two-man without”, a constellation in which no helmsman is needed. As they gradually outdo all their rivals, except for a pair of twins from Potsdam, they decide to become like twins themselves.
